Math and Computer Science Lab Rules
These rules are in place to assure the availability of the labs to
everyone who uses them. Please respect them.
General rules
Do not share your account with anyone. You are responsible for what
happens under that account.
Attempting to gain access to a machine you do not have rights on, or
attempting to elevate your access will result in severe disciplinary
actions.
Please be reasonable with your print jobs. Print Powerpoint
presentations multiple slides to a page.
Do not store data on the C: drives of the Windows machines. They are
formatted quite regularly and reinstalled. Please store data on your
Z: drive, which is your UNIX home directory.
Do not attempt to repair or alter any hardware or software in the
labs, even if you know how. See a lab manager in the event of a problem.
DO NOT PLUG LAPTOPS INTO THE NETWORK IN THE LAB OR ALTER ANY
NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
Passwords will be periodically checked for strength by the systems
administrators. Do not use dictionary words, names, etc.
Unix Specific Policies
Do NOT leave processes running after you logout.
Do NOT login to any faculty machines.
Do NOT login into vonneumann(our network server).
Do NOT print garbage to the laser printers.
Do NOT lock the screen for long periods of time.
Do NOT use a "weak" password.
NEVER share your account with anyone.
NEVER try to gain access to somebody else's account or files.
Please turn off the monitor when you are done.
ABSOLUTELY NEVER TURN OFF THE BASE OF A UNIX WORKSTATION!!!
Violating any of the above policies will result in a minimum of having
your
account temporarily disabled. Repeat offenses may be grounds for
having your
account
revoked. Intentional disruption or breach of security of the computer
system will result in loss of computer privileges, possible
disciplinary action by the University, and possible civil/criminal
penalties.
