Player/Stage Knoppix CD
I've customized a Knoppix CD (v 3.8) to contain the version of
Player/Stage in the labs. If you don't want to install Linux on a personal
computer, you can boot Linux off the Knoppix CD and run it without
altering your hard disk.
I'd recommend using a USB memory stick as a home directory. There is
plenty of documentation on that online. Alternatively, you can work on the
ramdisk (/home/knoppix) and scp the data off somewhere before turning off
the machine. Once you turn off the machine, if it's not on a memory stick
or somewhere else, it's gone - the ramdrive is volatile.
If you aren't already familiar with Linux, I'd encourage you to leave the
hard drive partition icons on the desktop alone. If you double click them,
your hard drive is mounted read/write, and you can damage files on them.
Careful now. I can't be responsible for anything you do to your home
machine, so backup everything that is important.
The custom image is here. Have fun, and be
careful. (Player version 1.6.5, for class use in Spring 2006)
The examples are already uncompressed and are at /ps-examples (off of
root). I'd copy them into home. Any binaries compiled on Fedora (including
the formation demo) will need to be recompiled to work on Knoppix.
Player/Stage 2.0
A new version has been made with Player/Stage 2.01. It is not for class
use
- code for the two versions are not generally compatible, but it's
provided in case you want to do something with it.
The P/S 2 image is here.
